How to clean amber jewellery
Amber is a rare and treasured gemstone, made of fossiziled pine tree resin from millions of years ago. Despite its ancient age, amber can be soft and prone to damage if cleaned incorrectly. Our methods below will help you to remove dirt and restore your amber to its full, dazzling potential!

- Amber can be washed in warm, soapy water, but make sure that you are using a mild detergent, such as dishwashing detergent or a delicate clothes detergent.
- Add a small squirt of soap to a dish of water and stir to incorporate – just enough that the soap disappears, but not so much that bubbles are formed.
- Next, simply wipe the amber with a soft microfibre cloth or chamois dampened in the solution and dry immediately afterwards. Make sure not to leave your amber wet for any period of time. If washing multiple treasures, do one at a time and don’t leave to dry on its own as the amber could potentially turn cloudy.
- It may sound strange, but you can polish your amber beads with olive oil! Almond oil is also a good alternative. The oil will remove any grease marks and make your amber absolutely shine!
- Don’t apply the oil directly to the jewellery. Instead, pour a small amount of oil to your palm and use the heat of your hands to smooth it over the amber. Buff the oil off with another soft, dry clothes straight afterwards.
Another easy way to clean your amber Trollbeads is to use a silver cleaning cloth. These can be obtained from any reputable jeweller, or even some arts supply stores. If you choose a cleaning cloth with two different sides then the cloth can be used to both clean and polish your gems!
